Boys & Girls Club's History with 21st Century Community Learning Center Grants
In September 2011, Boys & Girls Clubs of Lakeland & Mulberry announced the approval of a $492,582 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant. The grant will last for five years. It has allowed the James J. Musso, Carl G. Schowe and Wogan S. Badcock Jr. Units to hire certified teachers to tutor in math, reading and science. Members enrolled in this cost free program receive daily tutoring in addition to programs such as SMART Moves, and Triple Play Healthy Habits. The year long program provides continued academic help while keeping the fun and positive atmosphere that Boys & Girls Clubs are known for. Clubs are hoping to see large improvements in member’s academic successes as well as improvement in fitness and decision making skills.
In 2014, Boys & Girls Clubs of Lakeland & Mulberry was approved for another 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant at the John L. Sanders Unit. This grant allowed Sanders members to attend for no charge and receive the same awesome programming that the other three sites received.
In August 2016, Boys & Girls Clubs of Lakeland & Mulberry was approved for two new 21st CCLC grants; One grant is serving the James J. Musso and Wogan S. Badcock Jr. Sites while the other serves the Carl G. Schowe Site. The John L. Sanders site is in it's 3rd year with it's 21st CCLC grant. The grant continues to provide a wonderful cost free program with certified teachers, Project based learning activities, tutoring and a variety of enrichment opportunities.
